The Winds of Drif'Tara
There are three great islands, and several smaller islands and rocks, that levitate high above the ocean in the northeast of Drif’Tara. Known as the airlands, they are home to many indigenous creatures, and to a large population of humans, elves, and half-elves, known as the Sky People. The pegasi that they breed and ride are revered for their beauty, and have a close bond with their exclusive riders.
The airlands remain in mostly the same longitudinal and latitudinal position, but their altitude varies with the day and the season in a consistent manner, similar to the tides. This makes the largest airland, which is also the highest, ideal for aggriculture, as it spends most of its time above the clouds (where it is always sunny), and its frequent trips through the clouds provide plenty of water, no irrigation required. During most of the year, the lowest airland (they have no names, as per the tradition of the Sky People), it is accessible via an island peak.
It is not known how or why the airlands levitate, they have been that way ever since they were discovered. The way the lowest airland perfectly fits with the mountainous peak of the island below, which sharply contours up to meet the airland, suggests that at one time they were regular islands that were somehow compelled to break free of the ocean.
